John Kay: La Estela de un Cometa (Bill Haley and His Comets) ~ John Kay : Tale of a Comet (Bill Haley and His Comets)

John Kay: Big Joe Turner, Hank Williams, Glenn Miller,… muchos grupos diferentes

¡Qué buen gusto! ¿Qué cantantes famosos conoció?
John Kay: Conocí a muchos famosos como Chuck Berry, Little Richard, The Beatles,… por nombrar algunos

John Kay: Formé mi propio grupo, JK Rockets www.jkrockets.com

John Kay a los 17 años ~ John Kay at age 17

Frank Sinatra, Kitty Wells,… Me encantan.

Escuché a Bill Haley & His Comets “Crazy Man Crazy”.

John Kay: Si.

¿Qué pensaban sobre grupos como Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan,…?
John Kay: Me encantan… Conocí a los Stones, The Animals, Tom Jones, Eric Clapton,. .. cuando dábamos las giras por Inglaterra, Manfred Mann, Dave Clark, Spencer David Group, The Searchers, Gerry and The Peacemakers,…

John Kay: Encantado.

Thank you so much John, for this opportunity to interview you. As a 50´s Music lover, I´m a huge fan of Bill Haley & His Comets. You were Bill Haley lead guitar, right?
John Kay: yes, for 12 years

When do you consider Rock & Roll was born?
John Kay: Rock and Roll started to get popular here first in 1951 with Rock The Joint by Bill Haley. It was not called Rock & Roll yet.

Bill Haley played Hillbilly in the early 50´s right?
John Kay: yes, and in the late 40´s, The Saddlemen. Lots of artist were playing Rock & Roll… sort of… but Bill made it popular World-wide… and gave it a name

What years in The Comets history did you belong in?
John Kay: 1960 to 1967 steady on the road, then I recorded with him and did special show until 1972. The last show was in Wembley Stadium in London, in September 1972

How was Bill?
John Kay: A great guy, … very talented

How did he leave Hillbilly to play Rock & Roll?
John Kay: A long story, he heard blacks playing Blues,… and thought it would fit with Country Music. Everyone said,… no… but he did it… and the mixture is Rock & Roll. They were separate music forms and were never played on the radio waves together. Music for white and for black.

What Bands did Bill like?
John Kay: Big Joe Turner, Hank Williams, Glenn Miller,… many different bands

Great taste! What popular singers did you meet?
John Kay: I met many famous people, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, The Beatles,… to name a few

How is your current life, John?
John Kay: I have started my own Band, JK Rockets www.jkrockets.com

When did you receive the call from Bill´s Manager? What year?
John Kay: In 1960, I was 19. I played professionally since age 16. I thought it was a friend of mine playing a joke on me. But it was really Bill´s Manager

What kind of Music did you like when you were a teenager?
John Kay: Everything…Blues, Big Bands, Country, Classical,… you name it… Frank Sinatra, Kitty Wells,… Love them

You listened Bill Haley for first time one day when you were ill, right?
John Kay: I was ill , the doctor turned the radio on and my life changed. I heard Bill Haley & The Comets play “Crazy Man Crazy”. “What was that sound?” I asked myself. There was a beat, a melody, and an electric guitar! I told my parents that very day: “I wanna play a guitar!”

Thrilling! And you made your dream come true
John Kay: Yes, I am very very fortunate, I was in the Band that popularized Rock and Roll

You took music lessons with an Italian teacher but was not too much optimistic…
John Kay: No, my mom tried to tell him that would not stick with the guitar. He later told me that he did not think I would either.

Why do you think Rock Around the Clock was a big hit?
John Kay: It had it all… a beat…great tune… and sounded very different from Pop Music of that time. I mean if Rock the Joint was first, and many others, why this song was considered the first? Guitar was out front. It was in a movie, Blackboard Jungle. The solo was the first Rock solo that could be remembered

What about Europe? What do you prefer, the USA or Europe to play?
John Kay: Both,… but Europe fans stay more loyal. USA fans are fickle

and in Mexico in the late 50´s?
John Kay: 1960 to 1967 we were the Kings of Twist. Bill beat Chubby Checker to the punch in Mexico. El Rey del Twist. Lots of Hits on Orfeon Records

Did you like Mexico?
John Kay: Yes

What did you think you all about Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan,…?
John Kay: Love them… I´m friend with David Bromberg, Bob Dylan´s guitar player, he lives near me. I met the Stones, The Animals, Tom Jones, Eric Clapton,. .. when we toured England, Manfred Mann, Dave Clark, Spencer David Group, The Searchers, Gerry and The Peacemakers,…

Do you remember any special anecdote with Bill?
John Kay: Let me think… when I turned 21, … we were in Tampa, Fla… and was not of age to drink booze,… I don´t drink but anyway, Bill was going to get me stoned on my 21st birthday … he gave my vodka… so he thought all evening,… but… what he did not know was that I was on to him… I had a deal with the beer tender to give me water… I pretended to be drunk… and made a fool of myself… but I was sober… I fooled everyone in the Band,… Bill never knew that I was aware of everything I was doing, so the joke was really on Bill and The Comets,… I pulled it off…that´s a great memory.

It sounds fun!! Thank you for sharing it!
John Kay: There is lot´s more

Did he have sense of humor like you do?
John Kay: Oh yes!!! We loved playing jokes on each other. It gets boring on the road at times, bus, hotel, theatre, bus, hotel, theatre, on and on… No wonder some musicians turn to booze and drugs. I turned to photography.

How your life changed since you started playing with The Comets?
John Kay: I had a video production company for 30 years but I have always played locally.

Was it easy to have your own life and play with such popular Band?
John Kay: Yes, many people did not know that I was a Comet. Look, I have not got a big ego,… there are many, many great guitar players, I am just a very lucky one. I feel lucky I was there at the right time and place.

What about your current life? Are you touring around the World?
John Kay: No, but I want to… I just formed my band with my brother Stan, we have 3 cd´s.. but we are starting to play concerts telling my story, our last show was sold out.

John, thank you very much for this interview, I enjoyed it much! I wish you good luck with your new projects.
John Kay: My pleasure.
