Rockabilly Fever!: Roddy Jackson

Roddy Jackson: Gracias a Little Richard empecé a cantar.

The Early Blue Notes and Roddy Jackson in 1956

25 de Mayo de 1959 ~ May 25, 1959

Roddy Jackson, an American Rockabilly and Rock & Roll singer, songwriter, pianist and saxophonist who recorded for Specialty Records in the 50´s. Known for his raspy Rockabilly growl vocal style, Roddy is still as great today as he was in the 50´s

AF: Thank you Roddy for this interview and for your music that has been soundtracking my life since I was 13. How you got started in Music?

Roddy Jackson: My father was a professional musician and my mother was also very much into music. They saw my obsession with musical instruments and started me on piano lessons when I was six years old.

How did you get to record on a ´Black Label´ as Specialty?

Roddy Jackson: I auditioned for them and they signed me to a contract.

How did you know Sonny Bono? How was your relation with him?

Roddy Jackson: Sonny was the man that auditioned me for Specialty and was the producer on all of my recordings. We also wrote music together. He was like an older brother to me and I loved him.

Was Music a full occupation?

Roddy Jackson: I was fourteen years old when my first rock and roll band, the “Merced Blue Notes,” began and was fifteen when I started recording for Specialty, so I was not able to do music full time because I was still in school. Later, when I finished school, I went into music full time.

When did you retire from Music and when were you re-discovered?

Roddy Jackson: I quit the music business in 1968 and went back to it in 1981 as a performer and teacher of music and theater. In the summer of 2004 I received a call from “Now Dig This” magazine in England. They told me I was well known in Europe, that people over there had been trying to find me for a long time and that they wanted to publish my life story in their magazine. Next I was invited to perform in “Rhythm Riot,” a music festival in England, in which I appeared on November 26, 2004. My concert was well received and I have been invited to appear in many places ever since.

Has you memories of Little Richard and Larry Williams?

Roddy Jackson: It is because of Little Richard that I started singing. When I first heard him sing I loved it so much that I started singing all of his songs. We never met but I got to record with the same musicians that he did. They were the best. I did see him perform in Merced. He was great! I also loved Larry Williams’ music. I did meet him. Sonny Bono introduced us and it was the only time I spent time with him. Both he and Little Richard were very big influences on me, including piano style.

Did you enjoy performing in Hemsby?

Roddy Jackson: I absolutely loved it both of the times I was there.

What do you think about European fans?

Roddy Jackson: The European fans are wonderful! They really appreciate the contribution that was made by the American artists to the evolution of music. I have been treated like a king by them and am very grateful. Because of them I get to do what I love best.

What are your future plans?

Roddy Jackson: Soon I will be going into the studio to produce an album of original Roddy Jackson Rock & Roll music. I also plan on setting up a web site and want to do more traveling to share my music.

I´d could ask you the same questions you´ve been asked for the past 50 years, can you tell me what´s on your mind or something you have never been told?

Roddy Jackson: I am not only a musician, singer and songwriter but am also very much into theater. I started off as an actor and then wound up directing stage productions. I am also a writer and plan to be a movie producer some day.

Thank you very much, Roddy. I hope you still making your dreams come true.
